3. Rounds
Almost everyone who applies gets to give the Online Evaluation(OA) and it depends on their then criteria how many questions to do for getting shortlisted.
Some of us had done 2 while some did 1.5 and so on(out of 3)
Round 1: Online Evaluation
Type: HackerRank
Description:
We were given the link a day before and had to come to college for giving the test
The format:
- 1 DSA medium question
- 1 DSA medium-hard question
- We had to select a framework of choice(Springboot, Flask, Django, React, Node etc) and then given the whole full-stack application, find the bug and make sure all the given test cases pass.
Example Questions that I got:
2 pointer problem
Basic Tree question with some modification
Given a delivery platform, fix its errors in payment calculation
Difficulty Level: Medium to a little hard
Tips: The first question we had was easily solveable, and very basic so focus on ur DSA basics, try to build logic on the spot its kinda easy enough
They integrated a fullstack question at end that tested our prompting and problem solving and how we used the AI. This question was surprising so be prepared for surprises(last year there were 4 DSA questions n this time 2 DSA with fullstack)
After almost a month, they shortlisted 40 students (out of ~500) and I was one of them!
Typically, there is no preparation window between shortlisting and interviews but we were lucky as they announced shortlisting on weekend so got a little time to prep.
Round 2: Technical Interview 1
Type: Technical
Description: This was a DSA + projects round, no one that I know of was asked about system designing.
The interviewer went in depth about the projects, the technology and I noticed that if your projects weren’t strong enough to capture their interest, they asked about the code and methods in it(common for basic CRUD projects)
When I went in, the interviewer asked me where I’m from and all (not an introduction, just a chat) and what I knew about BNY.
I had researched a lot about them so my answer was better than a generic ‘it’s a fintech bank’ and that impressed him(I think??)
After discussing my projects(2 out of 3) the interviewer asked me what differences I noticed in diploma and bachelors since he saw diploma on my resume and what my favorite subjects were, I said OS, CN, SE and I knew he was gonna go for DBMS now so I kinda tried to avoid saying it but had to because BNY likes to ask MySQL queries and duhh he did.
I was asked to draw the table structure of BookMyShow and I did it with the keys(primary, super, candidate, foreign, yes all of those) and explained why screen was a weak entity and my primary key choices based on indexing and retrival efficiency.
He then asked me to do a query ( I don’t recall exact but it was a nested subquery) I explained that with a diagram, complexity analysis n the internal working. He gave 0 reaction and I was sure I messed up and he asked me another query saying “lets make this a bit more complex” and I struggled for almost 2-3 minutes before writing the rough idea and told that I couldn’t come up with the exact query but this is how I would approach it and explained with the diagram.
That was the end(in about 35 minutes) and then he asked if I had any questions for him, so I asked him a lot about BNY and his POV on things
Difficulty Level: Medium
Tips:
- Be confident and precise
- Talk loudly, explain your thinking
- Mention tradeoffs even if they don’t ask(it might create a tad bit of depth)
My Experience:
Overall, it was great to interact with the interviewer and kinda got to know a lot of what BNY was expecting from us.
2 gruesome hours later they announced round 2 people in the com seminar hall
Round 2: Technical Interview 2
Type: Technical (No HR questions for me)
Description:
This round depended a lot on the resume I think.
Some were asked literally 3 questions and let go in 20 minutes and some had HR heavy rounds while some had no HR or miscellaneous stuff.
Difficulty Level: A bit Hard
Tips: You wont clear this round if you dont know your tech. Know what you love and Im almost sure it’ll work out. You should be able to talk in extreme depth about whatever the hell is in your resume.
My Experience: I knew I had performed too well in this round, better than the one before
Most of our discussion was based on AI agents, my projects, agentic design, optimization, security & privacy in AI which was luckily all of my favorite things!
I genuinely liked talking about this stuff and the interviewer was glad too which made me a lot more excited to converse. He asked me a lot about these things and how I implemented them and all the niche stuff.
Even though he didn’t give me any reaction either, he liked my cybersecurity internship that I had done and what I concluded from it like my experience, what I learnt and how well my takeaways were.
After discussing about my projects(architecture, drawbacks, input flow till output, tradeoffs, problems, what I would do differently), he asked me a lot about AI in general(the agentic things and the stuff I mentioned above) then an aptitude question(just do top 20 aptitudes) and my internships.
He gave me a significant amount of time to ask him questions which I leveraged well because round 2 were finals and he would be kinda deciding my case for hiring.
He genuinely liked my questions and answered in detail nicely for 2-3 mins(yayayy)
After almost 3 hours of waiting and many many mental breakdowns and smoodhs, they announced results in our lovely com seminar hall.
Out of 15 people that interviewed for round 2, I was one of the 6 that got in(AAAAHHHHH)
5. Tips
Just be confident, positive and make sure you enjoy the process as you give the interviews!
If you do not know something that they are asking, politely say so instead of making up castles because given their experience, the interviewer can tell if you are lying(they use the tech you are building stories about)
Research about the company before you go in, it genuinely makes them feel like instead of blind applying you actually wanna be there
Read about their principles and try to add them as keywords in your answers but not very obviously
The interviewer can tell if you are nervous or if you genuinely dont know so relax.
Brush up MySQL queries (I did whole dbms 2 hours before the interview so I did struggle a bit)
THINK OUT LOUD, n sit straight(its only like 45 minutes it wont kill you)
Maintain eye contact and speak like you know it
Don’t try to outsmart them, they definitely know much much more than you do so be humble
Decide what questions you will ask before only so that on the spot you wont fumble but be ready to dynamically change them based on the interviewer.
Focus on giving your best effort, you cant control the outcome but you will regret forever if you don’t try your level best right now
